THE ELDERS OF MY LAND

They are difficult for a stranger to understand
The elders of my land
When they speak, you don't speak
It is unethical to the peak
You don't sit and watch them stand
It is against the culture of the land
You don't stand where they sit
You won't even try it
When you are wrong, you apologise
When they are wrong, you still apologise
So I asked my father
He himself being an elder
How these ethics are so superb
Then he replied with a proverb:
"If you know how to wash your hands well
You will eat with elders as well"
Do you know the meaning?
It calls for reasoning
If you know how to behave well
You will dwell where elders dwell
The elders of my land
When they speak, you don't speak
It is unethical to the peak
You don't sit and watch them stand
It is against the culture of the land
You don't stand where they sit
You won't even try it
When you are wrong, you apologise
When they are wrong, you still apologise
So I asked my father
He himself being an elder
How these ethics are so superb
Then he replied with a proverb:
"If you know how to wash your hands well
You will eat with elders as well"
Do you know the meaning?
It calls for reasoning
If you know how to behave well
You will dwell where elders dwell
